Bitcoin launched in 2009 as the first durable form of scarce digital money without a company, bank, or government in charge. Its Genesis Block embedded a newspaper headline about bank bailouts, setting the tone before anyone knew whether the network would survive. Proof-of-work secures the ledger, issuance falls through programmed halvings, and the total supply is capped at 21 million under rules enforced collectively by its users.
It has survived exchange collapses, government bans, civil wars over block size, hostile forks, mining restrictions, and hundreds of premature obituaries. Along the way, it grew from cypherpunk software traded for pizza into an institutional reserve asset, national legal tender, and a market large enough to reshape global finance.
Thousands of newer networks have promised more speed, utility, and civilized dinner conversation. Yet the verdict from the faithful remains unchanged: “There is no second best.”
